We asked for your top picks for our DVlicious “Best Soup in Bergen County” contest and whittled it down to five finalists. Each is being profiled this week with the winner selected Monday, Feb. 22. Here’s a “bowl-ful” rundown on one of them.

Franco’s Metro, 1475 Bergen Blvd., Fort Lee, (201) 461-6651

Number of Soups Offered: At least eight a day plus weekly specials. The "usuals" include pasta fagioli, chicken soup, lentil, minestrone, straciatellli, tortellini & escarole, escarole & bean, and Italian wedding. Special soups of the week include asparagus and creamy shrimp bisque.

Worth Dishing About: The base of each soup is the restaurant’s own, home-style chicken stock, which they make in large quantities. Chicken soup is the most popular. Gene Bazzarelli, the general manager and son of the founders (the restaurant dates back to 1972) says on a cold day they’ll sell three gallons of chicken soup alone.

Pasta fagioli is the most popular Italian-style soup, and Bazzarelli's favorite.

The restaurant is also known for delicious thin crust pizza in almost any combination, as well as fine Italian cooking for lunch and dinner.
