May 13: Historical date

May 13 is one of those dates that hold much history. Three Portugese children reportedly saw the Virgin Mary for the first time on this date in 1917. On the flip side, Pope John Paul II survived an assassination attempt on May 13, 1981. The Rev. Jim Jones was born a half-century earlier. Ironically, Jamestown, Va., was settled on the same date back in 1607. Famed golfer Annette DeLuca — from NORTH BERGEN — turns 42 today. And hers isn’t the only celebrity birthday.

Stevland Hardaway Judkins — aka Stevie Wonder — was born on this date (1950), as well as Harvey Keitel (1939), Joe Louis (1914), Dennis Rodman (1961), Bea Arthur (1923), George Lucas (1944), Peter Gabriel (1950) — and, oh yes, Stephen Colbert (1964) and “Buckethead” (Brian Caroll: 1969).

Mott the Hoople’s nom de ax extraordinaire, Overend Watts, was born on May 13, 1949. The late Richie “La Bamba” Valens was born on this day in 1941.

And none other than “Magic Dick (Richard Salwitz),” the man on the lickin’ stick for the J. Geils Band, is officially a senior today: He’s 65. Reaching way back, jazz great Gil Evans was born this day in 1913.

Yes, we’ve left someone out. But we’ll come clean:

Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish turns — are you ready? — 54 today.
