Michael Mascaro, 24, and 20-year-old James Fogarty said their Park Avenue apartment had been broken in and several items removed Sunday night, Officer William Diedtrich said.
Officers David Sayers and Anthony Lacher determined that didn’t happen – and the pair actually had several bags of heroin, hypodermic needles, a glass pipe and other items “consist with illegal drugs and drug use,” he said.
Both were taken into custody and later released pending a Municipal Court hearing on charges of possession of drugs, drug paraphernalia and hypodermic needles, as well as making false statements to police.
Early yesterday, another Park Avenue resident came to headquarters to report that her home had been burglarized and that Fogarty had tried to give back several stolen items.
Sgt. John Carty, Detective Sgt. Sean Smith and Officer Brian McKeever returned to Park Avenue and, after investigating, took Mascaro and Fogarty into custody again.
Both were taken to the Bergen County Jail, where Mascaro remained held this morning on $7,500 bail. Fogarty posted the same amount and was released. They’re each charged with burglary and theft.
