Responding quickly to a call from the Jordan Road resident, Officer Glenn Howard spotted and pulled over the thief's car -- bearing Ohio license plates -- on Forest Road, Capt. Michael McDermott said Tuesday.
Howard "saw the shipping label torn off a package and two iPhones inside with a packing invoice addressed to the Emerson resident on Jordan Road," McDermott said.
He took the driver, 31-year-old Dominican Republic native Jonathan Thwaites, into custody.
Thwaites had gotten himself a bogus New Jersey driver's license using the victim's address that he used to order the phones, McDermott said.
He then parked outside her house Saturday morning and waited, the captain said.
"The minute the delivery truck pulled up, he got out," McDermott said.
Thwaites then showed the bogus ID and signed for the package, he said.Howard caught him minutes later.
Thwaites was charged with theft, receiving stolen property, trafficking in ID theft and producing bogus government documents.
He was sent to the Bergen County Jail, where he remained Tuesday after ICE issued a detainer seeking to hold him for a possible deportation hearing.
Meanwhile, police were trying to determine if he may have done the same thing in other towns.
