Civilian life savers honored by Pascack Valley PBA Local 206

The honorees included young Brandon Houlis, who used the Heimlich manuever to save his dad’s life.

Theresa Mondo was involved in a similar incident when an 88-year-old Hillsdale woman stopped breathing while choking on a piece of meat in a Westwood banquet hall.

Mondo, who was honored at this week’s event, played a huge role in saving Margaret Elko Rosenbauer, said Westwood Police Officer Scott McNiff, who dislodged the food with the Massachusetts nurse’s help.

As Mondo cleared the prone woman’s airway, McNiff pushed repeatedly on her chest — at least 40 times, by one witness’ account — and Rosenbauer was quickly breathing again.

McNiff and Mondo then turned her on her left side and strapped on a high-flow oxygen mask — retrieved from McNiff’s radio car by another civilian honoree, Kevin Saul (SEE: 88-year-old woman hails Westwood officer who saved her life).

The color returned to Rosenbauer’s face and she opened her eyes, witnesses told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
