HILLSDALE, N.J. -- Joseph A. Matarazzo, Sr., of Hillsdale, died peacefully on Monday, Dec. 5. He was 81.
He is survived by his wife, Adelaide (Fidanza); children, Anthony Matarazzo and his wife, Dorothy and his daughter, Marianne Matarazzo; grandchildren, Bobby and John Kalb and Anthony Matarazzo. He is predeceased by his son, Joseph A. Jr. (2007).
He was born in East Harlem, to Anna (Marra) and Ciro Matarazzo. He played AAA Baseball for the Central City Reds. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1955-1958. He was an active member, and past president of the Boys Club of NY, Jefferson Park Alumni, was honored to receive the Keystone Award from the Boys Club of America for his long and devoted service. He served as District Deputy and Grand Knight, 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus St. John’s Council #1345 and as Executive Director, NJ State Council Knights of Columbus. He was past president of UNICO National, Bergenfield Chapter, and was recognized as an Honored Citizen of the Honor Legion, of the Police Departments, State of NJ.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday, 9:30 a.m. at St. Therese of Lisieux R.C. Church, Cresskill. Entombment to follow at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus. Family and friends are welcome to celebrate his life on Wednesday, 7-9 p.m. and Thursday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the Frech-McKnight Funeral Home, 161 Washington Avenue, Dumont. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Columbia University’s Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer’s Disease and the Aging Brain.
