Water levels around New York City, which is perched on a series of islands at one of the world's biggest harbors, have risen nearly 1.5 feet in the last 200 years, signaling how vulnerable the city is to climate change, Business Insider reports.

Business Insider says a new study shows sea levels around the world are rising at a quick pace, putting millions of people and assets at risk of storm surges and other weather disasters. The report predicts even as soon as 2020, New York City will be plagued with frequent storms and rising temperatures.

What was seen with Hurricane Sandy was just the beginning, according to Business Insider.
