Bridget and Grant Lewison will light the menorah honoring their mother, Elizabeth, at 6:30 p.m. at the River Vale Community Center.

Elizabeth Lewison, a 49-year-old attorney who was raised in Demarest, moved to River Vale 12 years ago. She volunteered at Northeast New Jersey Legal Services in Paterson, providing free legal services to the needy.

Various local officials are among those expected to attend the annual Hannukkah event, which will be followed by a reception with refreshments and games.

"[Elizabeth] was a wonderfully friendly lady," Valley Chabad Hebrew school teacher Hindy Drizin told Daily Voice. "Always wanting to chat after she dropped off her children in Hebrew school — always inquiring about the welfare of others."

Lewison was active in the community as well as at Valley Chabad, officials said.

"The menorah lighting signifies the celebration of the miracle of the oil and the miracle we have each day to celebrate our freedom," Drizin said. "Elizabeth embodied the spirit of celebrating light and happiness and always had a nice word for everyone."

Located in Woodcliff Lake, and serving the surrounding Pascack Valley and Saddle River communities, Valley Chabad hosts four additional public Menorah lightings in Woodcliff Lake, Allendale, Westwood and Tice’s Corner Mall.

The center also hosts and sponsors events events for children, teens, adults and seniors.
