James P. Kane, professor at William Paterson University, plans to show slides and give a lecture focusing on the Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and Oahu in Hawaii that brought this country into World War II. The event is planned for 7 p.m., Dec. 15, at the library, 125 N. Maple Ave.

More than 2,400 people were killed in the attack, including more than 1,100 sailors and Marines aboard the battleship USS Arizona. One of the deadliest attacks in American history, the two-hour strike destroyed nearly 20 American ships and more than 300 airplanes, according to History.com.

The presentation focuses on the attack but also touches on America's island campaign in the Pacific that led to the Japanese surrender in 1945, officials said. Ridgewood library's program is free and open to the public.

Light refreshments will be served. For more information, visit the library's website.
