Hackensack Brewing Co. began unofficially in 2006 by Mike Jones, who -- after work at Hackensack University Medical Center -- would come home and brew in his high-rise apartment.

He and his longtime friends Irfan Qureshi, Alexander Ferenczi and Herbert Lamont Barr III on Feb. 2 are celebrating the opening of the Hackensack Brewing Co.'s taproom on Johnson Avenue.

Jones hopes the new space will shine a light on city's history -- the taproom decor and beer names a reflection of that.

"With the city's massive redevelopment under way, there's going to be a huge influx of transplants into the city," Jones said.

"A brewery taproom can be very influential from a cultural standpoint and we want to make sure that all of the new residents coming into Hackensack get a taste of what makes Hackensack unique."

There will be 12 beers on tap -- something for everyone, Jones said.

"With everybody thirsting for IPAs, it's easy to have hoppy beers take up five or six taps," he said. "We want a tap for the guy who loves a Weizenbock or the girl who loves her Belgian Quad.

"We make beer because we love beer and I think that will be felt in the taproom."

Join Hackensack Brewing Co. for a grand opening celebration Saturday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m., 78 Johnson Ave., Hackensack (behind Koch Memorials).
