PARAMUS, N.J. — Senior Paramus High School wrestler Kyle Cochran will be joining the University of Maryland team next season.
Cochran became the first Spartan title winner since Neil Hanley in 1982 at the NJSIAA State Championships last March with a buzzer-beating finish.
He is a two-time NJ State Placer (8th, 1st), NHSCA Junior National Champion, 2016 Super 32 Champion, 2016 Journeymen Fall Classic Finalist, 2015 Beast of the East Placewinner (4th), Greco/Freestyle Fargo All-American and is ranked 8th in Bergen Couny at 160 pounds via InterMat Wrestling High School rankings.
Cochran and Bergen Catholic's Nick Suriano, who finished his undefeated career (159-0) with four state titles, were honored by Paramus officials with a street sign in Jockish Square depicting their names.
“Kyle proved he is one of the nation's best his junior season," UMD Wrestling Coach Kerry McCoy said in a statement.
"He loves a challenge and does a great job rising to the occasion.”
