A Dodge Ram was turning left from northbound Shaler Boulevard onto westbound Banta Place when it struck Maria Gabriela Andino, a mother of two, in the crosswalk early Saturday afternoon, they said.

The driver, who is in his mid 20s, said he didn't see the victim.

She was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where doctors pronounced her brain dead at 5:25 p.m. Monday, a day before her 40th birthday, a family friend said.

"The family is making the decision" about when to remove her from a respirator, the friend said.

Andino, who was known locally as Erica, arrived from Ecuador with her husband a few years ago, those who knew them said. They had two children, 9 and 12.

An investigation was continuing.
