PARAMUS, N.J. -- A purported psychic from East Rutherford conned a Glen Rock woman out of more than $41,000 -- and was asking for $90,000 more -- before Paramus police arrested her, authorities said Thursday.
Holly Stanley, 25, began meeting with the 30-year-old victim in an office on South Farview Avenue in Paramus, Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said.
"The victim was seeking assistance on personal matters occurring in her life at that time and agreed to conduct a crystal ball reading for $100," he said.
Stanley "told the victim that there were sprits affecting her life" that she could assist for removing -- for an initial $5,000, the chief said.
After several more sessions, Stanley said she needed $36,000 more, he said.
Finally, in early April, Stanley asked for $90,000 -- at which point the victim went to police, Ehrenberg said.
Detective Chris Zuck investigated the case, leading to Stanley's arrest on theft-by-deception charges.
She posted $5,000 bail and was released pending a court hearing.
Ehrenberg urged anyone with additional information about Stanley to call Paramus police: (201) 262-3400.
