No one was injured.

Jose Rodriguez of Jordan Bus Company picked up the students at the high school a short time before the fire started, Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said.

Rodriguez heard odd noises, then noticed smoke coming from the engine as the bus headed north on Spring Valley Road -- so he immediately pulled the bus over across from Eastbrook Middle School and got everyone out, the chief said.

All the students were turned over to the middle school, Ehrenberg said.

Paramus firefighters extinguished the blaze. Hazardous materials units from Paramus and Bergen County were dispatched to clean up 20 to 40 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled onto the roadway and into an adjoining parking lot, he said.

This kept Spring Valley Road closed for about three hours, the chief said.
