A 14-year-old suspect has been taken into custody and charged with murder in connection with a fatal stabbing of a beloved taxi driver on Saturday, authorities said.

The juvenile, whose name has not been released, is accused of killing Mohammed Khater, 38, of Brick Township at 2:45 p.m. in a residence, according to Ocean County County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer and Brick Township Police Chief James Riccio.

Khater was affectionately and widely known as "Moe Cabbie."

The youth also was charged with several weapons violations they said.

The juvenile was being held in the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center.

Brick patrol officers responding to a 9-1-1 call found the victim with a stab wound to the right side of his abdomen. He was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries, the prosecutor said.

The Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Investigation Unit assisted Brick police and the prosecutor's office in the case.
