RINGWOOD, N.J. — Police from Wanaque and Ringwood will lead a hike through nature to raise money for drug addiction treatment this Saturday, Oct. 17.
A $20 donation for each participant in the Hike Against Addiction from 10 a.m. to noon at Shepherd Lake in Ringwood will go toward helping others at the New Life Recovery Center in West Milford. Students pay half price.
Wanaque Detective Sgt. Phil Cavallaro said he hopes the weather cooperates -- as opposed to chilly temperatures that limited the turnout last year.
The hike through the scenic area lasts about a mile, he said.
Ringwood and Wanaque police launched the event three years ago as a way to help out the community.
"It's a very worthwhile cause in light of what's going on [today]," Ringwood Police Chief Joseph Walker said.
Cavallaro called it "something where we can have fun a little bit and show that we're also in this fight."People only see us when we're locking people up for drugs or overdosing," he said. "We want them to know we understand and we're here also."
