POMPTON LAKES, N.J. — Residents and officials are at odds about what caused the high rate of cancer and other illnesses in the DuPont neighborhood where regular explosions took place in earlier decades, NJ Spotlight reported.
Officials said the area had more than the above average number of cancer cases, but not enough to be statistically significant, according to NJ Spotlight.
The DuPont facility left behind toxic chemicals that ended up in the groundwater and soil, the story said. It was deemed a public health hazard by the federal government in 1994, NJ Spotlight says.
