State officials ordered the cleanup of contaminated groundwater nearly three decades ago when PCE and TCE were discovered after solvents were dumped near a munitions facility. In 2008, officials found out contaminants were coming up through the soil and and seeping into basements in the area, NorthJersey.com reported.

One clean up solution would involve pumping fresh water into the area to flush out the contaminants, while the other would involve the introduction of chemicals that would make the contaminants harmless, NorthJersey.com said.
