Backus recently turned 90 and joined the department 66 years ago. His commitment to Pompton Lakes extended to his high school days when he played trumpet in the band and football.

The fire department celebrated Backus' dedication toward the end of 2015 with a party, cake, and more gifts

"Albert has volunteered every month to help feed the needy at St. Mary's and also volunteered at Eva's Kitchen in Paterson as well as at a soup kitchen in Jersey City," the fire department posted on Facebook. "Overall great and humble man."

During his time with the fire department, Backus served as captain and first and second lieutenant.

After graduating Pompton Lakes High School in 1943, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

He worked at a grocery store while in high school, in the textile trade for 20 years, and as a custodian at Stephen Gerace School in Pequannock. He also spent time as a crossing guard in his hometown.

Backus attends St. Mary's Church and enjoys photography as a hobby.
