POMPTON LAKES – During the 15 years Carmela Wolosz has been running the Rhino Theatre in downtown Pompton Lakes, she has seen countless children be positively affected by their involvement in theater.

“It increases their confidence,” the Pompton Lakes resident said, of the kids who come from Bergen and Passaic counties, as well as the surrounding areas.

She also has seen how good kids can be to each other.

“Theater children are special children. They are creative and artistic,” she said. “When these kids come here to the theater, they are all so inclusive. They are so supportive.”

This past June, Wolosz, along with her partner, Jo-Ann Ventor of Wyckoff, expanded the business by obtaining a second studio, a converted church down the street from the original theater. With the additional location, the theater, that also conducts shows for adults, has the ability to put on more programs.

The theater recently announced it will have auditions for two musicals.

Children ages 7-12 are invited to audition from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday for Annie Jr. Performances of the show are scheduled for Dec. 2-11.

Teens ages 12-18 are invited to try out forfrom 4-6 p.m. Oct. 12 for Footloose. Performances are slated for Jan. 13-15.
