Hawthorne Gluten-Free Bakery Serves A Diverse Community

HAWTHORNE, N.J. — Gluten-free food isn't a luxury, says Nancy Kriney, whose husband, Scott, owns Isaura Bakery in the borough. That’s why they've opened a store in an area available to a diverse group of customers.

“Since it is a need, not a want, we wanted a location that would be accessible to every income level,” Kriney said.

Gluten intolerance is a condition associated with celiac disease that causes the body to react negatively to gluten, a protein in rye, wheat, and barley. One percent of Americans are affected by the disorder, according to the National Council for Celiac Awareness.

Kriney said she wanted to locate the business where people from towns and cities like Paterson, Glen Rock, Haledon, and Ridgewood could all feel comfortable.

Blue-collar Hawthorne, near Route 208, provides a location that draws people from Paterson, Haledon, Glen Rock, Ridgewood and elsewhere who are as varied economically as they are geographically, she said.

“We have customers coming from Cape May, from upstate New York, from New York City, and from all of the neighboring towns,” Kriney said.

Other communities have gluten-free bakeries, Kriney said, but they don't offer the same product line.“We have breads. We have bageuttes," she said. "Most of the gluten-free bakeries will do cakes, cookies, sweets - mostly sweets. We offer that but we also offer a more high-end sweet."They taste better than the usual gluten-free stuff.”

Isaura Bakery also offers bagels, pizza, and cheese rolls, Kriney mentioned.

Isaura Bakery (204 Diamond Bridge Ave.) is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. It is closed Monday.
