Bruno's was recently selected as a finalist in the Daily Voice's DVlicious Best Pizza in Passaic County competition. Voting continues through Oct. 26.

Rich Mastriani, co-owner of Bruno’s, recalled a story of a former Clifton resident who moved to Sussex County but drove back just for the pizza.

“The guy ordered a pie for him and his wife and during the hour long drive, he began eating it,” Mastriani said. “When he got home and his wife opened the box there were only two slices left. She made him drive all the way back for another pie.”

Mastriani noted that many customers who move away will still travel back for the pizza.

“We get people from Vermont, Chicago, Texas,” Mastriani said. “The guy in Texas wants us to freeze our pizza and ship it to him.”

The rave reviews have not gone unnoticed. Bruno’s was recently named as the state's best Sicilian slice by nj.com. Moving up from second place last year.

“We have been coming here for 15 years,” said Quinn Elam, who was enjoying lunch at Bruno’s with his daughter Aleah. “The Sicilian slice is the best I’ve ever had.”

Quinn makes the trip back to Clifton to visit Quinn, but also to get some pizza.

Mike D’Angelo of Queens, N.Y. opened the pizzeria in 1972 with his father Charlie, who is from Sicily. Mastriani eventually came on board as partner.

“I learned everything from my father,” D’Angelo said.

The recipe for the pizza is a secret, but Mastriani credits the success to consistency.
