Pascrell said the program could help drive economic growth by giving Passaic businesses the tools and resources to get their business online, find new customers, and grow their business online. Increasing small business' online presence could help to expand Passaic's economy.

Let’s Put Our Cities on the Map is a program that empowers communities to support their local businesses and encourage them to get online -- where many people are going to find goods and services. Google is partnering with StartLogic to provide its popular website offerings for free, including an easy-to-build website, a customized domain name and web-hosting for one year.

"The perception that getting online is complex, costly and time-consuming has prevented many Passaic small businesses from taking the first step," said Emily Harris, marketing manager for the program. "This program makes it fast, easy and free for businesses to get online."

Passaic businesses can go here to get started with these tools. Residents can also use the site to help promote local businesses.

"We need to make sure our small businesses have the resources they need to be competitive in the 21st-century marketplace -- a marketplace that is increasingly online," said Pascrell. "Online access is essential to connect with customers, and often the only way to access information to improve your product or learn about competitors.

"I want to thank Google for being here today and helping put Passaic small businesses on the map. I am so proud of this community and the work its business owners are doing every day."

Pascrell's office noted that fewer than half of U.S. small businesses have a website and only 37 percent have claimed or updated their business information on a search engine.

Pascrell represents New Jersey's Ninth District -- which includes parts of Passaic and Bergen counties, as well as a bit of Hudson County -- and is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee. You can visit his website, here.
