High Schools Around Fairfield: Drive-By Graduations & Live Stream Ceremonies Planned

A drive-by ceremony and beachside event are ways Fairfield County's first-ever distance-learning graduating class will celebrate their exit from high school. Many districts are still putting plans in place since Gov. Ned Lamont announced on Wednesday, June 3 that in-person graduation ceremonies will be allowed starting July 6.

Meanwhile, these schools are set to send off their 2020 seniors with the first of the events taking place this week at Danbury High School.

The school will have drive-by graduation where graduates will be able to get out of their car and walk across the stage, hear their names announced and take pictures. Because of the class of 2020 size, 772 graduates, this will be a three-day event, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m,. on Wednesday, June 10, Thursday, June 11 and Friday June 12.

Greenwich High School is following stringent social-distancing rules and complex traffic patterns, and seniors there will walk across a stage to graduate Thursday, June 11, with a series of diploma ceremonies that will be streamed on the school's website.

Superintendent Toni Jones notified parents last week of the plan ,saying the district is  “committed to having our students walk across a stage, and while it may be different, GHS administration is doing everything possible to make graduation special.”

Stamford Public Schools finalized its commencement plans for 2020 graduates, announcing on Tuesday, June 9 that there will be pre-recorded school-specific videos in the coming weeks of graduations in-person, by appointment in small groups, in mid-July.

“While this year’s graduation is not what any of us envisioned earlier this school year, nor would it ever be our first choice for celebrating this milestone for our students, it is the safest, most equitable option we have during this ongoing health crisis,” said SPS Superintendent Dr. Tamu Lucero.

“After careful consideration, including reviewing our survey results, speaking with student and building leaders, class advisors and the Board of Education as well as conferring with Stamford’s health, safety and security officials, this hybrid option is our best choice.”

The pre-recorded virtual graduations for each school will closely align with that school’s typical graduation ceremony and reflect its unique personality. The in-person, small group by-appointment-only event will be limited by the most recent state and health department guidelines.

The specific time and dates of these events will be announced.
