Enrollment begins for Bergen County Sheriff’s Police Academy

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: The 11th class of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Citizen’s Police Academy begins in a month, and registration is now open for the eight-week course designed to give residents a working knowledge of law enforcement policies and tactics.

County residents 18 and older are eligible to participate.

“One of the most important components of law enforcement is fostering strong relationships with the community,” Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino said. “Our Citizen’s Police Academy gives residents firsthand knowledge of the important work police do to enhance public safety and protect Bergen County residents.”

The academy is presented in a classroom-style format, with demonstrations of equipment and tactics used by law enforcement in murder investigations, motor vehicle stops, K9 patrol, drunk driving checks and “C.S.I.”-styled crime scene analysis.

The class will also tour the Bergen County Jail, as well as the “old” jail at the Bergen County Courthouse, the Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI), and the Medical Examiner’s Office.

The next citizen’s police academy class is set to begin Thurs., Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.

Class meets once a week at various locations around the county and concludes with a graduation ceremony on Fri., Nov. 16.

The deadline to register is Sept. 24.
