It began with the arrest yesterday of a Norwood man on charges of stealing a purse from an unlocked vehicle parked on Durie Avenue on Sunday.
Bryan Tighe, 18, was carrying five watches when Detective Vincent Aiello arrested him after reviewing security video from businesses in the area.
Tighe, who was charged with burglary and theft, “could not explain how he got the watches,” Kaine said. He was released pending a Municipal Court hearing.
Aiello, meanwhile, held onto the watches as evidence and continued investigating, the chief said.
Last night, an Arnold Avenue resident reported a home burglary. Taken were jewelry — including the watches — and electronics, Kaine said.
Detectives from River Edge assisted in recovery the electronics, which Aiello determined were at a location in their town.
As a result, the victims all got their property returned — something that statistics show happens less than 15% of the time.
Aiello charged both Tighe and Joseph Muti, 20, of Closter with burglary and theft in connection with the Arnold Avenue break-in. Tighe also was charged with possession of a hypodermic needle.
Tighe, who was out on bail after being arrested on drug possession charges in February, was being held on $50,000 bail.
Muti was released pending a court hearing.
