“Elder abuse is a significant issue in this country and one that does not receive the attention it deserves,” Silver Elliott said. “Elder abuse can take the form of physical, emotional, sexual, verbal and financial abuse as well as neglect. And this abuse cuts across all lines—socioeconomic, cultural, racial and geographic. Anyone can be a victim.”

"Although there are estimated to be between 3.5 and 5 million victims of elder abuse each year, only 14 shelters for elder abuse victims currently exist in this country."

SeniorHaven for Elder Abuse Prevention opened at the Jewish Home Family in northern Bergen County in July 2015.

The hearing took place at the County Administration Building before the Board of Chosen Freeholders and before a panel of experts at the Bergen County Division of Senior Services Public Hearing of the Needs of Older Adults.

"We are the only elder abuse shelter in the State of New Jersey," said Silver Elliot. "We provide a 90 to 120 day stay at one of our Jewish Home Family organizations at no charge to the victims and we offer them a full range of services including medical care, social services, pastoral care, rehabilitation services, nutritional counseling and legal services.

"We have to do this for them because they cannot do it for themselves."
