Norwood Entrepreneur Pens Business Manual

NORWOOD, N.J. — Norwood entrepreneur Kristine Carney sat in her home office staring at the phone, the computer screen and the clock.

She had just quit her corporate printing job of 30 years to build her own business, and she was terrified.

"I had no idea if I was on the right track or if I was reaching anybody," Carney, 51, told Daily Voice.

Sure enough, the phone started ringing and the emails started coming in. Three years later, "Yellow Dog Designs" — named after Carney's two pet labradors — is a thriving marketing and consulting business.

Now Carney is trying to help other entrepreneurs with "A Business Toolkit For Beginners," a manual on how to start your own business that she self-published in May.

"When I struck out on my own, I asked myself a lot of the same questions I answer in this manual," Carney explained.

Some of the questions answered in the 83-page text include "how to form a business," "how to name a business," "how to write a business plan," "who are your customers," "who are your competitors" and "what insurance do you need."

"The manual won't overwhelm you," Carney said. "It just gives you the basic information you need to start your own business."

Carney realized the need for a manual after doing marketing for local startups.

"Every small business owner is overwhelmed and doesn't know what to do first," Carney said. "I wrote the manual because everybody kept asking me the same questions over and over again."

She hopes the manual will find a place in the startup world.

"People are fed up with corporate America and are starting to form their own businesses so they can do what they love," Carney said. "I think a lot of those people could use my manual to show them how to get the ball rolling."
