OLD TAPPAN, NJ -- A rainstorm washed out the evening fireworks, but attendees still got a full Town Day of activities yesterdday.
Kids climbed a rock wall, pogo-ed in bounce houses and enjoying carnival rides on the soccer field at Stone Point Park.
"We have a tight-knit committee that has been meeting, planning and working on this thing for months," said Diane Vanderlinen, who marched the grounds in a bright green Town Day t-shirt. "We were able to get so many sponsors who helped us."
Vanderlinen also cleaned picnic tables after a rowdy pie-eating contest before the winds kicked up.
Andrew and Karen Rubinstein brought young Ben, Ethan and Aaron to met local police and playfully re-enact an arrest by handcuffing an officer and putting him in the back of a police vehicle.
Meanwhile, Lynn McIntosh sat behind the wheel of a parked ambulance as families checked out the units. Fellow crew member Linda DeSimone sat in the driver's seat with a clipboard, ready to take the names of volunteers.
"They get to see who we are. We let them know that we are here and that we are looking for volunteers," said DeSimone. "It's a real commitment, but we have a members-only party each year and it is really special."
