YOU SAW IT HERE FIRST: Three Montclair children on their way to dance camp in Waldwick were OK after their nanny said she blacked out behind the wheel and their minivan crashed into a tree in Washington Township this afternoon.

The mother quickly made it from her job in Englewood Cliffs to Washington Avenue, where the crash occurred around 1 p.m. as the Toyota Sienna was climbing the hill near Van Emburg Avenue.

Helping everyone from the vehicle were Bunny Gayle of New York City, who drives for Waste Management, and Paolo Brocato, a temporary employee working with him from Labor Ready in Paterson.

“The kids were a little shaken up at first, but they seemed fine,” Waste Management Route Manager Tom Blesing told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Township police issued a careless driving summons to the nanny after interviewing her at length. She declined medical treatment.

The children were all wearing seat belts.

Although they weren’t involved in the crash, the workers from the waste management company — out doing private residential pickup from their Fairview garage — always call in crashes and help whenever possible, Blesing said.

Their truck was stopped, they said, when the minivan hooked left across the road in front of them and into the trees.

So Gayle and Brocato dashed over immediately.

A Washington Township police officer and a Westwood EMS worker took turns sitting with the boy and two girls on the curb until their mother arrived.
