Lettieri, 34, of Southington, died Saturday, April 5, at Hartford Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Meghan, and their 2-year-old son, Finn. Both were at his bedside — along with members of his Torrington police family — when he passed.
In a traditional show of mourning and respect, the Torrington Police Department has draped black and purple bunting over its front entrance.
A fundraiser for Lettieri’s family has raised nearly $15,000 as of Wednesday. Organizers hope to raise $100,000 for them.
Born in Red Bank, New Jersey, Lettieri felt a lifelong calling to serve in law enforcement, according to those close to him. He joined the Torrington Police Department in 2014 and was promoted to sergeant in 2021 thanks to his dedication and leadership, the fundraiser notes.
Torrington Police Chief William Baldwin told the CT Post that Lettieri likely would have risen through the ranks to become chief one day.
Lettieri served on the department’s Special Response Team — called SWAT at other departments. Despite undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer, he returned to work in late March to assist with tryouts for the elite unit, Baldwin said.
"His courage and determination serve as an inspiration to his loved ones, colleagues, and anyone who hears his story," the fundraiser said. "Nick's journey is one of service, love, and perseverance."
Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in October 2023, Lettieri continued working through chemotherapy and surgery. He never gave up hope or his passion for serving the community, according to his obituary.
"He courageously battled pancreatic cancer for 18 months, never wavering in his strength and positivity," his obituary said. "Even while struggling, he continued to serve the city of Torrington and to care for his family and friends. He never stopped putting others first."
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. at Aqua Turf, 556 Mulberry St., Plantsville. There will be no calling hours, and burial will be private.
