Happy Birthday Upper Saddle River's Roy White, Retired Yankees

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, N.J. -- Happy birthday to Roy Hilton White, formerly of Upper Saddle River.

The retired Yankees outfielder was born Dec. 27, 1943 and turns 73 on Tuesday.

He was raised in Compton, Calif. and signed with the New York Yankees directly from high school after turning down college scholarship offers.

He played his entire Major League Baseball career, from 1965-1979, as an outfielder for the Yankees. He lived in Upper Saddle River while playing with the team. 

White played alongside teammates like Willie Randolph and Thurman Munson. As a rookie, he played with Micky Mantle and Roger Maris.

After retiring from the major leagues, he played for the Tokyo Giants in Japan for three seasons.

White went on to coach for the Yankees for three seasons in the mid-1980s and again in 2004.

He established The Roy White Foundation in 2002 to offer college financial assistance for New York-area children and young adults. 

White and his wife Linda live in Toms River. They have two children.
