A motorist was killed in a crash on the Jersey Shore, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 6:30 a.m. on Route 18 southbound in Marlboro Township, police said.

Route 18 South in the area of Tennent Road and Route 520 was shut down until about 10 a.m., according to Capt. Stephen Levy, a police department spokesman.

The vehicle, a 2008 grey Honda Accord,  left the roadway and struck a large tree, Levy said.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the Honda, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Identification of the driver is being withheld pending notification of his family.

As of now, there are no witnesses to the crash and the cause is under investigation, Levy said.

First responders included members of the Marlboro Township Police Department, New Jersey State Police, Quality Medical Transport, Marlboro Fire Department, Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company, Atlantic Health Paramedics, Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office and the state Department of Transportation.

Patrolman Christopher VanCuren of the Marlboro Township Police Traffic and Safety Bureau is investigating the crash. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact VanCuren at 732-536-0100 ext. 0144 or CVancuren@marlboropd.org
