The defendant was 17 at the time of the crash, and because of his age, his identity is being withheld, they said.

He has been charged on juvenile complaints with two counts of second-degree vehicular homicide and two counts of assault by auto, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m. on April 19, 2022, officers were dispatched to 3468 U.S. Highway 9 for a single-vehicle motor-vehicle crash.

John Ryan McCarthy, 15, of Allentown and Asaivion Whiting, 17, of Manalapan both died in the accident.

The driver lost control of his 2004 Chevrolet Malibu while driving "at excessive speed, swerving in and out of lanes," authorities said on Wednesday, May 24.

While changing lanes, the car veered off the road to the right, they said.

It then struck multiple objects before rolling through a parking lot and coming to a rest when it struck a steel support pole from a business sign, the prosecutor’s office said.

The driver and a 15-year-old girl from Manalapan were treated for minor injuries. Another passenger — a 17-year-old from Manalapan — was treated for his injuries at an area hospital.

Anyone with information about this crash is still being asked to contact Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Brian Boryszewski at 800-533-7443 or Freehold Township Police Officer Sean Foley at 732-462-7500.
