UPDATE: An Elizabeth man was charged with assault by auto and child endangerment after he crashed a stolen car into a Lyndhurst gas station canopy, seriously injuring his 16-year-old female passenger, following a police chase, authorities said. Byron L. Hernandez, an 18-year-old laborer, crashed the 2019 Honda Civic stolen shortly after 8:30 a.m. Sunday. A passenger hopped into the driver's seat of a pickup truck during a traffic stop and led New Jersey State Police on a wild chase before crashing and jumping into a backyard pool, authorities said. An Oakland landscaper was drunk when he bailed out of his pickup truck and fled the scene following a crash that sent another resident’s car into a tree, authorities said. A man who killed a Teaneck father and his four daughters when his pickup truck veered across a Delaware highway into the path of their minivan was sentenced to a year's probation on Friday, according to a published report. Suffern Man Sentenced For DWI Crash That Nearly Killed Victim
A Suffern man convicted last year of vehicular assault and DWI after leaving the scene of a crash that left a man seriously injured has been sentenced to five years in prison, according to Rockland County District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe. Jonathan Elwell, 36, was found guilty by a jury in September 2017 of felony assault, two counts of felony vehicular assault, and one count of leaving the scene of an accident.
