Rebecca Abma, Daily Voice’s assistant managing editor, has worked in community news in Northern NJ for more than 20 years and has written for local, regional and national magazines, newspapers and websites.

The Paramus native comes to the Daily Voice with a rich background in the workings of community government, education and lifestyles in Bergen and Passaic counties. She is the founder of hyperlocal news sites Midland Park Press and Northwest Bergen Press.

Abma joined the Daily Voice in August 2015 to launch the North Jersey sites.

She was formerly a reporter at Daily Voice.

Happy Birthday To Rutherford's Vin Mazzaro RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Happy Birthday to Rutherford’s Vincent Michael "Vin" Mazzaro! Mazzaro, a professional baseball pitcher who was raised in Rutherford, turns 30 on Tuesday. Born Sept. 27, 1986, Mazzaro began playing baseball for Rutherford High School, where he led the team to two straight state championships. He made his Major League debut in 2009 with the Oakland Athletics, and has played for the Kansas City Royals, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Miami Marlins. In July 2015, Mazzaro signed a minor league deal with the Atlanta Braves.

Midland Park Council Rehires Officer After DWI ATV Accident MIDLAND PARK, N.J. — The Midland Park Mayor and Council voted Thursday to reinstate an officer who was terminated following an ATV accident while under the influence, northjersey.com reports. Rehired Officer Joseph Gaeta will earn $119,166 a year (the top tier of the salary guide), with full pension benefits, according to the report. Prayer Vigil For Slain Bergen County Mom Planned For Sunday MIDLAND PARK, N.J. — Local houses of worship are holding an ecumenical community-wide service to pray for the family and friends of a Midland Park mother who was slain on Thursday -- and for the emergency service members who responded to the call. Closter Celebrates Harvest At Annual Mac Bain Farm Festival CLOSTER, N.J. — Closter’s Mac Bain Farm is hosting its 8th Annual Harvest Festival Saturday. Visit the 5.5-acre borough farm for an afternoon of marshmallow roasts, cider, pumpkin picking and painting, storytelling and music. The farm, a Green Acres property maintained by John Mac Caffrey, previously was owned by prize-winning-dog breeder Ken Mac Bain. Today, it primarily is an educational garden. Cops Trade Handcuffs For Aprons At Clifton Red Robin Fundraiser CLIFTON, N.J. — Local law enforcement officers will serve burgers for a good cause on Saturday, Oct. 24. Red Robin’s 10th annual Tip-A-Cop fundraiser benefits the Special Olympics of New Jersey. Officers will trade handcuffs and badges for burgers and apron at the event, which is being held at 10 restaurants across the state. Englewood Cliffs Schools Interviewing For Vacant Superintendent Slot ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. — With Englewood Cliffs School Superintendent Robert Kravitz no longer in the district as of Oct. 23, the Board of Education is working with the state School Boards Association to find his replacement, northjersey.com reports. Mahwah Council Changes Course On Proposed Pipeline Ban MAHWAH, N.J. — Upon legal advice, the Mahwah Township Council tabled a proposed ordinance banning pipelines not regulated by the state public utilities board, northjersey.com reports.
