Although the mostly “indiscernable” markings found in the second-floor bathroom bore both words, “there was no specificity to the graffiti such as a threat, date, time, or location,” Schools Supt. C. Lauren Schoen said.
“Mahwah Police were immediately notified and responded and opened an investigation,” Schoen wrote in an email to parents, co-signed by Police Chief James N. Batelli.
“A threat assessment protocol was conducted to determine the appropriate actions to be taken to ensure the safety of the students, faculty, and staff,” the superintendent said.
“After careful consideration, it was concluded that a modified lockdown would not be an appropriate response and internal measures were immediately taken by school administrators and the Mahwah Police to increase security,” she wrote.
“Administration is reviewing the video surveillance cameras in the area in an attempt to determine who may have written the graffiti on the wall,” Schoen said.
