The Center provides housing, cultural and educational services for over 50 children who have no other adults to provide for them. It was founded in 1971 by former Black Panther Party leaders Peter and Charlotte O’Neal. It was popularized in the 2004 PBS documentary "A Panther In Africa" and has hosted actors Sean Penn and Jude Law.

Shevack, an adjunct professor of sociology at Ramapo College, told Daily Voice he went there to learn how to grow the Mahwah Environmental Volunteers Organization (MEVO), a nonprofit he sits on the board of.

"I feel the UAACC is an excellent example of how grass roots non-government organizations can effectively help reduce poverty in periphery nations," Shevack told Daily Voice.
