MAHWAH, N.J. -- A Mahwah Scout Leader will rappel down a 10-story building in Woodland Park to raise money for Girl Scouts.
Debby Bassin, a five-year troop leader, believes in the Girl Scout program so much that she will go “Over the Edge” Sept. 19.
“I want to show my girls that they can do anything,” Bassin said.
Sponsored by Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey, the rappelling event is expected to raise $75,000 through supporters who will also rappel down the building, 1 Garret Mountain Plaza in Woodland Park.
Each competitor will raise $1,000 from backers to earn the privilege of rappelling along with Bassin, and will be accompanied on the descent by Over the Edge special event company, to assist.
The event will be a day-long family festival that includes rock climbing, obstacle courses, entertainment and food, among other activities.
Admission to the festival is $18, children under three are free.
No prior training is required for rappellers, but they have to be at least 18, weigh between 110 and 300 pounds, and raise $1,000 in sponsorships.
Over the Edge is being sponsored by St. Joseph’s Healthcare System in Paterson, Express Scripts, Kearny Bank, Brian Trematore Plumbing and Heating, New Jersey Natural Gas, QSP/Ashton Farms, PNC Bank of Woodland Park, and Toys R’ Us.
