MAHWAH, N.J. -- Nine-year-old Mark Leschinsky of Mahwah always had an aptitude for engineering. As early as one and a half, his dad, Boris said he could take the batteries out of a TV remote control and put them back properly.

Now the fourth grader is leading his peers in the Mahwah Inventors Team (MIT), which he started earlier this year. The first meeting, on Nov. 17, drew some 30-plus kids.

"My goal was to bring together a group of like-minded students interested in science and engineering to create new things," said Mark. "We have a big advantage as inventors when compared to adults as we all have much better imaginations!" (Click HERE for an earlier Daily Voice story on Mark.)

Adds the elder Leschinsky: "Mark loves inventing and improve things around him. He was also very excited to win a number of kids invention competitions and wanted to inspire other children to make inventions. But there were no other groups or clubs where kids can do something like this together. That is how the idea of the club was born."

Those who attend will study interesting inventions and participate in a host of kids invention competitions throughout the year. Boris, an inventor himself with close to 40 patents, oversees and supervises.

MIT, which is free, meets monthly at the Mahwah Public Library, usually on the third Thursday of the month. The next meeting is Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 4:15 p.m. and is open to those in grades three to five.
