MAHWAH, N.J. -- A Mahwah resident who majors in chemistry at The College of Wooster in Ohio, was honored by the school for her contributions to a community project.
Meg Heller, a Wooster junior, was recently honored at the college’s annual Experiential Learning Symposium.
Helller and fellow student Katie Stock, received the Student Award in Excellence in Experiential Learning for their contributions on starting a Community Connections Program at Wooster in which first-year students and faculty unite with local community partners and projects.
Heller volunteered over 250 hours of her time to identify community partners and provide faculty with ideas in directing community-embedded activity. She also put together best-practice material, lead reflections, and developed and managed a transportation model to move students between the campus and the partner sites.
In the two years since its inception, the program has supported eight faculty and 110 students in ongoing, substantive service-learning. Some of the partners include a senior living center, the Boys & Girls Club of Wooster, a local elementary school, and local Headstart program.
The College of Wooster is specializes in mentored undergraduate research. Every Wooster senior works one-on-one with a faculty adviser to create an original research project, written work, performance, or art exhibit.
The goal is for students to develop independent judgment, analytical ability, creativity, project-management and time-management skills, and strong written- and oral-communication skills.
Founded in 1866, the college enrolls approximately 2,000 students.
