This is the 18th year for the fundraiser, but the first year it's been called the "Brian Beutel Battle of the Blue," in memory of Beutel, who had served in the Bergen County Sheriff's Office and was actively involved in fundraising for Tomorrows Children's Fund.
"Brian was the epitome of a true TCF angel, and we acknowledge all of his hard work and dedication, throughout his many years as the Bergen County Sheriff's Department's Battle of the Blue Team," said TCF Administrative Director Sue Garbe.
"We will continue this amazing event not only to honor Brian's legacy but to continue to help all of the young children battling cancer."
The competition will feature 16 teams of police officers from northern New Jersey police departments, including the Bergen County Sheriff's Department, Bergenfield, Englewood, Fort Lee, Franklin, Garfield, Hackensack, Jersey City, North Bergen, Passaic, Passaic County Sheriff's Department, Paterson, Teaneck, Union City and West New York -- and a team from the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.
The teams will play elimination rounds until only one team remains and is declared the 2017 Battle of the Blue Champion. Members of the Franklin Police Department will attempt to defend their 2016 title.
The event is sponsored by the teams' PBA locals.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for kids. The evening will also include auction items, raffles, refreshments and contests for fans.
Advance tickets are being by participating police departments, and they'll also be sold at the door.
The teams will face off at the Rothman Center of Fairleigh Dickinson University, River Road in Hackensack. The event begins at 5 p.m., with opening ceremonies presented by the Bergen County Sheriff's Department Honor Guard.
