Fairfield U Grad Returns To Talk About Women As Investors

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A Fairfield University graduate and Wall Street leader who specializes in teaching women about finance is the featured speaker on Thursday, Nov. 10, as part of the Dolan School of Business Lessons in Leadership lecture series.

Kathleen Murphy, a 1984 graduate from Fairfield University, said she speaks across the country about how women can be more confident in their financial decisions. The 7:30 p.m. lecture is free and open to the public, and will be held at the Quick Center at Fairfield University, 1073 N. Benson Road, Fairfield.

“Ninety percent of women will be the sole decision maker on their financial matters due to longevity or divorce,” Murphy said. "Women are not nearly as confident as men in managing their finances.

Murphy, president of personal investments for Fidelity Investments, has been named one of the 50 Most Powerful Women in American Business by Fortune Magazine, among other accomplishments. She oversees a business with more than 17 million customers and over $1.9 trillion in client assets. 

She's previously served as chief executive officer of ING U.S. Wealth Management, leading several business units. She began her career as general counsel and chief compliance officer with Aetna Financial Services. 

“The Dolan Lecture features highly accomplished, visionary, and internationally recognized business leaders as exemplars for our students, and I can think of no one who better fits this vision than Kathleen Murphy,” said Don Gibson, dean of the Dolan School of Business. “She’s an example of taking a Fairfield education and becoming an impactful leader with that foundation.”
