A neighbor called Brick police about 4:10 p.m. on Sunday to complain that a dog had been outside on a third-floor balcony in direct sun for several hours, police said in a statement.

Upon their arrival at 252 Sawmill Road, Brick Police Officers Scott Smith and Joe Lardieri found a pit bull dog panting heavily, barking and in distress. Attempts to contact a resident at the front door were unsuccessful, they said.

Herbertsville Fire Company brought a ladder truck to the scene so officers could rescue the dog. Officer Smith climbed to the balcony and let the dog in through the sliding glass doors as neighbors clapped and cheered, police said.

The dog was brought to an emergency veterinarian for overnight treatment and observation. On Monday, Jade Brown, the dog’s owner, was issued a summons for failure to provide care for an animal, police said. The dog has been seized, and is currently safe and cared for in a local animal shelter, said Sgt. Jim Kelly, a spokesman for the Brick Police Department.

Sgt. Jason Shepherd praised the community's cooperative effort to rescue the dog, “I’m just glad someone called it in in time for us to get to the dog. The fire department and the guys all did a great job,'' Shepherd said.
