Fugitive wanted in Clifton jewelry store holdup surrenders

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: As CLIFFVIEW PILOT exclusively reported, a man wanted in connection with a Clifton jewelry store holdup came to city headquarters Tuesday night and surrendered. Detectives had been searching for Lester Hughes, 43, since capturing his brother, Rockman, in Lyndhurst an hour after the late Monday morning robbery of Tony’s Jewelers.

Although he originally had arranged to come in at 4 o’clock, Lester Hughes’ arrival was inexplicably delayed until nearly 7:30, a law enforcement source with direct knowledge of the case told CLIFFVIEW PILOT, which reported late Tuesday afternoon that Hughes had agreed to face charges that include armed robbery.

It was unclear whether his girlfriend, 48-year-old Debra Viscel, who police said was driving the getaway car, would be with him.  CONTINUED….
