The Rutherford Community Blood Bank will hold its spring blood drive in memory of Fred Fiume, a Rutherfordian who died in July of 2015 at the age of 53.

The drive will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Kip Center.

Blood donors will receive a $5 gift card to Dunkin’ Donuts.

Fiume had a challenging illness most of his adult life, but chose to give to the community and his country. He was married with four children, a blood donor, a Past Exalted Ruler of the Elks and a member of its Special Children’s Committee. He also served a six-year tenure on the Rutherford Board of Education and volunteered with the Rutherford High School Music Boosters.

Professionally, he served four years of active duty in the United States Army and 14 years as a reservist, including a deployment to Iraq, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

He worked as a dentist in the military, private practice and various correctional institutions in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York, including facilities on Rikers Island. He also served on the board of the New Jersey Academy of General Dentistry.

Appointments to donate blood are not required, but can be made by calling 201-251-3703 or by clicking here.

The Kip Center is located next to the municipal parking deck, 55 Kip Ave.
