Robber Who Threatened To Blow Up Hillside Bank Arrested: Police

A man who entered a Hillside bank Wednesday afternoon and brandished what he claimed to be an explosive device is under arrest, Chief of Police Vincent Ricciardi said Friday.

Jihad Wright, 28, an Elizabeth resident, was arrested there by Hillside police and charged with robbery and kidnapping. Wright was charged with kidnapping for allegedly detaining a bank teller in the course of the robbery and trying to take his vehicle. 

Wright, was being held at the Union County jail pending a bail hearing, may also face federal charges. 

Authorities say a man in a mask and wearing a construction helmet entered Investors Savings Bank and threatened to blow it up. He made off with about $4,000. 

"We take the safety and protection of our community very seriously in Hillside. Our officers and detectives maintain a high level of proficiency and professionalism in carrying out their law enforcement duties. The swift and safe resolution to this case is a testament to those qualities," Ricciardi said.
