Police responded to a report of shots fired around 8:15 p.m. at 16th Street and Avenue A. Officers quickly caught Michael F. Jones a few blocks away, at West 20th Street and Avenue A, after witnesses said he'd been seen there.

Police also found a .25-caliber handgun at 20th and Kennedy Boulevard after Jones allegedly ditched it there.

Jones and a 19-year-old man were arguing when Jones pulled a gun and fired one round,  missing the other man, police said. He then walked from the scene.

Jones, who was wanted on a Hudson County Superior Court warrant, has been charged with receiving stolen property and weapons offenses in addition to attempted murder. The weapon he used was reported stolen out of Titusville, Florida, according to police.

He was being held at the Hudson County jail.
