Police and firefighters Saturday responded when a runaway dog found herself in the strong currents of the Kill Van Kull between Bayonne and Staten Island.
The dog’s owner was taking “Cher” for a walk around 3 p.m. at Dennis Collins Park on the banks of the waterway when she got loose. Bayonne police officers were attempting to retrieve her when she jumped into the Kill Van Kull, a strait between Bayonne and Staten Island that runs under the Bayonne Bridge.
The Bayonne Fire Department responded with land units as well as Marine One. Port Authority police officers also joined in the rescue effort.
The BFD marine unit was eventually able to pull Cher from the water and on board the boat. The grateful owner was reunited with her at Robbins Reef.
“[The] response by several units of the Fire Department, including the Marine Unit, as well as the quick actions of police officers from both Bayonne and Port Authority, proved to be the difference in rescuing this dog from danger. I want to thank the firefighters and police officers for their actions and professionalism,” said Chief Keith Weaver of the Bayonne Fire Department.
