Via, considered to be a leader in on-demand public mobility development, is offering rides in its central zone for just $1 through March 21, Hudson County View reports.

The service, which is intended to work in tandem with the existing public transit system, designates areas based on a “central zone” and an “outer zone.”

Using Via’s app or a dedicated phone line, passengers can select pickup and drop-off locations: rides in the central zone are $1 through the 21st, while rides in the outer zone cost at least $2 plus 50 cents for each additional mile.

Via tracks real-time routes to match passengers together that have similar destinations. Passengers are picked up and dropped off at designated “virtual bus stops.”

The app also allows passengers to request a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

Ultimately, Via is intended to improve the connections between various districts and neighborhoods throughout the northern and southern city boundaries.

The service runs weekdays between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.
